I’m Giving Up Alcohol for Lent

I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic school from kindergarten through 4th grade. I joke that “I did my time” when people ask me why I don’t go to Church on Sundays. Sometimes I’ll even throw out a “Jesus is with me always”!

The other day I read an article titled What Happens to Your Body When You Haven’t Drunk Alcohol for 28 Days and it inspired me to give up alcohol since Lent is beginning and it would be the perfect opportunity to test it out.

Lent is the period of 40 days that comes before Easter. Starting with Ash Wednesday, this is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities. Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus’ crucifixion by Rome.

It is more common these days for believers to surrender a particular vice such as favorite foods or smoking. Whatever the sacrifice, it is a reflection of Jesus’ deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline.

Lent is an old English word meaning ‘lengthen’. Lent is observed in spring, when the days begin to get longer.

The decision to give up alcohol wasn’t because I’ve been abusing it or using it as a coping mechanism. If you had asked me 2 years ago if I could give up alcohol I would’ve told you you were out of your mind (*insert clapping emoji). I was going out every weekend, drinking myself into oblivion, and using alcohol to deal with my every day stress! If you’ve read some of my recent posts about my weight loss journey you know that alcohol isn’t a trigger for me anymore but something I use in celebration, especially during my Friday night date nights with my boyfriend!

The decision to give up alcohol is more of an experiment. We have this one body that we are given, don’t you want to treat it well? If you’ve ever bought a car didn’t you take extra care of it (at least in the first few years)? You’d wash it constantly, get routine maintenance and oil changes? This is the same thing – but it’s your body! I want to find out what will happen to my body if I stop drinking for 40 days. I want to find out if I’ll sleep better, if my skin will appear less puffy and red, if I’ll lose more weight because my body isn’t processing out alcohol every weekend, if I’ll have more mental clarity and focus. There are so many things I’m eager to test and compare.

Just like when we’re adopting a new nutrition program we have to find out what works for us right? Well this is my social experiment where I’m testing the theory on what will happen to my body (physically and mentally) if I stop drinking alcohol for 40 days.

I’ve never done this before! I think the longest I’ve gone without alcohol was 2 weeks? I want to share this with you so that it holds me accountable and that you can check in with me and ask how I’m doing! I encourage you!

You may not be giving up alcohol but maybe you can give up something else? What would happen if you decided to test yourself? Knowing it’s only an experiment, will that make you more likely to succeed and follow through?

Let me know what you’re giving up for Lent and we can do it together!
